Services for John Elsworth Stephenson, 64, Peru, who died April 12, 1987, at Grinnell General Hospital at Grinnell, were held Wednesday, April 15, at the United Methodist Church in Peru with the Rev. Anne Louise Weisenfluh officiating. Burial was at the Peru Cemetery.
Born Sept. 25, 1922 in Madison County, he was the son of John E. and Blanche Jennings Stephenson. He was married Dec. 29, 1951 at Grant City, Mo., to Jacquelynn Black.
He was a member of the VFW post and American Legion, both at Winterset. He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Peru.
Mr. Stephenson retired in 1984 as a maintenance worker for Madison County. He also worked for 11 years at Sargeant Quarry.
Survivors include his wife of Peru; daughters, Gayle Kibbe and husband Henry of Peru; Lorna Stephenson of Pleasant Hill, Toni Waltz and husband Dan of Winterset, Elizabeth Kent of Winterset, and Shana Smith and husband Phil of Osceola; sons, Gene and wife Nancy of Winterset, Wade Porter and wife Becky of Winterset, Sgt. First Class Ryan J. and wife Karen of Germany, Eric and wife Roxanne of Peru, 21 grandchildren; his mother, Blanche Stephenson of Winterset; sisters, Mary Agan and husband Everett of Peru, and Dorothy Henrichs and husband Forrest of Thayer; and a brother, Glenn and wife Betty of Peru.
He was preceded in death by his father.
