PIONEER CITIZEN DIED SATURDAY

Lawson Eldridge Had Come to Madison County in 1856

Lawson A. Eldridge, a resident of Madison county since pioneer days, died last Saturday at the Winterset hospital after a week of illness, following a stroke. He was 91 years of age.

Mr. Eldridge was born in Indiana, on Sept. 4, 1851, the son of William and Rebecca Ray Eldridge. In 1856 he came with his parents in a covered wagon from Indiana to Iowa. They settled on what is now known as the Eldridge estate in South township, and this county was his home from that day until his death.

He was married again, on Jan. 27, 1898, to Sarah F. Harris. They were the parents of one son and one daughter. Mrs. Eldridge died on July 16, 1930.

Mr. Eldridge was a member of the Masonic lodge for over 60 years.

He is survived by two daughters, Jennis Harris of Winterset and Opal Wearmouth of Lorimor; one son, Arthur Eldridge of Jefferson; seven grandchildren; and two brothers, Albert Eldridge of St. Charles and Melvin Eldridge of West Bend.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. Reed Kessler. Burial was made in the Union Chapel cemetery.

Ninety-one Years Old and Had Lived In the County 87 Years.

Lawson Eldridge, resident of Madison county for almost 87 years, died aat his home on Saturday, June 26, at the age of 91 years. Funeral service were held at the Ramsey and Richards funeral home on Monday, June 28, with Rev. Reed Kessler the officiating minister. Interment was made in the Union Chapel cemetery.

Lawson A. Eldridge, eldest son of William and Rebecca Ray Eldridge, was born in Indiana on September 4, 1851. In 1856 he came with his parents from Indiana to Madison county in a covered wagon and settled on what is now known as the Eldridge estate in South Township and made this county his home until his death. He was united in marriage to Martha V. Johnson on November 28, 1874, and to this union were born two children, one of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Johnson preceded him in death on September 27, 1893. On January 27, 1898, he was united in marriage to Sarah F. Harris, who passed away July 16, 1930, leaving one son and one daughter. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over sixty years.

He is survived by two daughters Jennie Harris of Winterset, and Opal Wearmouth of Lorimor; a son Arthur of Jefferson; two brothers, Albert of St. Charles and Melvin of West Bend; seven grandchildren, Dale Russel and Norma Wearmouth, and Loren, Frances, Gerald and Kathleen Eldridge; and a host of other relatives and friends.
