Leslie Wayne Mapes, Winterset

Services for Leslie Wayne Mapes, 64, Winterset, who died Dec. 16 at the Des Moines General Hospital, were held Wednesday, Dec. 19 at the Collins Funeral Home. A Masonic service was also held and full VFW military graveside services were held at the Winterset Cemetery.

Born at Macksburg on Jan. 9, 1920, he was the son of Harve and Alice Friberg Mapes. He retired in 1982 from the Marquette Cement Co. at Earlham.

Mr. Mapes was a lifelong resident of the area and served in the Army. He married Gertrude Hope Oct. 15, 1941 at Albany, Mo.

Survivors include a son, Leland James Mapes of Norwalk; a daughter, Vivian Darlene Dowell of Longton, Kan.; sisters, Cora Bristow of Winterset and Vera Gamble of Carlisle; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and a sister.
