Mortuary - S. B. Quaintance

Sidney Breece Quaintance, son of Edward C. and Evaline Breece Quaintance, was born May 28, 1854 in Crawford county, Ohio and departed this life on December 31, 1931 in Vail, Crawford county, Iowa.

When a very small child he came with his parents to Iowa, settling on a farm in Granville, Mahaska county. He came to Vail about thirteen years ago.

He was reared a Quaker, in which faith he continued throughout his early life later joining the Methodist Episcopal Church of Winterset of which he was still a member.

In 1911 he was united in marriage to Nellie Harriett Hymes of Winterset, Iowa, To this union was born one daughter, Nellie Evelyn.

For many years he followed the business of harness maker and for a number of years he has served the town of Vail as night watchman, meeting his death while serving his community, being run down by a passing automobile on the Lincoln highway early Wednesday night, December 30, 1931.

He was a faithful officer, performing his duties regularly and consistently. For a man of his age he showed great vitality and perseverance in the prosecution of his duty without partiality or fear. He was a kind husband and father and had a host of friends who regret that he became the victim of American haste which is taking too large a toll of life for its pay.

He is survived by his wife and daughter, Evelyn and three children by a former marriage: Ed Quaintance of Sisseton, South Dakota; Clyde Quaintance of Barnston, Nebraska; and Mrs. Carl Shannon of Rock Rapids, Iowa.

Rev. Zimmerman conducted the funeral services Saturday morning January 2nd at 10 o’clock at the Presbyterian church. Burial was made in the Vail cemetery.
