Winterset Madisonian, May 1, 1872, page 8, St. Charles Letter

This day we conveyed to earth all that was mortal of our fellow townsmen, L. P. Thompson. He died at 7 a.m. His place in the church (Methodist Episcopal) or community will not be easily filled. For honesty and straightforwardness in business transactions he had few equals and no superiors in this community. For a long time he had struggled against disease, but at last was overcome and conquered. Peace to his remains and honor to his memory.

Elsewhere on page 1…

We regret very much to read the announcement, to be found in our St. Charles letter, of the death of L. P. Thompson, of that place. Mr. Thompson was long an invalid. He was a man much respected, thoroughly reliable, good and true, and his memory will long be cherished.
