George R. Cook, of Jefferson Township Shoots Himself and Dies Instantly.
George R. Cook, commonly known as Ray Cook, committed suicide at Mr. Hazen’s place in Jefferson township, last Monday evening, by shooting himself with a revolver. The unfortunate young man was 23 years old, and made his home with his father in Jefferson township. Just at sundown on Monday evening he rode up to Mr. Hazen’s place and inquired for a young lady acquaintance, who, he said, he had been told was there. Being informed that she was not present, he turned and started away. Mr. Hazen’s house is situated at some distance from the public road. As Cook neared the gate, he got off his horse, drew a pistol and fired two shots, one of which pierced his heart and the other his temple. He seems to have died immediately.
The above is all that seems to be definitely known of the distressing affair. There is a rumor that he was led to the rash deed by disappointment in a love affair, but, so far as we know, it is only a rumor. It is sad that one in the prime of young manhood should lift his hand against his own life, and doubly sad to his friends, whom his act has placed in the position of more than ordinarily grief-stricken mourners.
