Thursday, September 6, 1923Death of Joseph N. McDowell
Word was received here yesterday of the death of Joseph N. McDowell, who died Tuesday evening, Sept. 4th at 7:30 of cerebral hemorrhage, at his home in Des Moines. Newt McDowell as he was known here, was formerly in the carpenter trade in Winterset and after his marriage to Miss Emma Casey, they moved to Des Moines, over 20 years ago. His death comes as a shock to his Winterset friends as he was not sick previous to his death.
He is survived by his widow and two daughters, Mrs. O. F. Allen of Rosalia, Wash., and Mrs. A. H Bainter of Edin, Idaho.
The funeral will probably be held Friday afternoon at his home in Des Moines, 945 West Thirteenth Street.

Page 4Joseph Newton McDowell was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, Nov. 20, 1849. He came to Iowa, Nov. 28, 1863, locating near Winterset. He was united in marriage to Addie Baldock of Patterson in 1882. She died in 1892. To this union four children were born, two boys who died in infancy and two daughter, Mrs. Nora Allen of Washington and Mrs. Geneva Painter of Idaho, both being present at the funeral service. In 1904, he was united in marriage to Emma Casey of Winterset. He was a faithful member of the United Presbyterian church at Patterson, later uniting with the M. E. church at Winterset and had been a member of that church until the time his membership was transferred to Des Moines, being a member of Grace M. E. church at the time of his death.
He was stricken with hemorrhage of the brain, which resulted in his death Sept. 4, 1923, after an illness of two days.
He was a kind and loving husband and father, always living every day as he had expressed himself, “I want to be ready when the summons comes to depart.” He passed away peacefully and quietly, just as he had lived his life, a happy remembrance to all who knew him; his honest, upright Christian life a living example. He leaves to mourn his loss a loving wife, two daughters, seven grandchildren, five sisters and one brother.
He was a member of the carpenter’s union of Des Moines, also a member of Madison lodge, No. 136, I.O.O.F. of Winterset.
Funeral services were conducted at the late residence at 945 West 13th Street, Saturday, Sept. 8th by Rev. L. M. Grigsby of Grace M. E. church. Interment was at Glendale cemetery, where services were conducted by the I.O.O.F. of Des Moines.
