JAMES H. ROGERS OF LORIMOR DIES

Elderly Man Spent Most of Life as Farmer in This County

Lorimor--(Special)--James H. Rogers, who spent most of his long life as a farmer in the south part of Madison county, died June 15 at his home in Lorimor at the age of 85 years.

Mr. Rogers was born in Putman county, Missouri on Jan. 6, 1856, the son of Lemuel and Elizabeth Calfee Rogers. His mother died when he was three years of age, and he was reared by his Grandfather and Grandmother Calfee.

In 1874 Mr. Rogers came to Madison county. Here he was married on Jan. 1, 1883, to Mary Emma Thomson. They were the parents of seven children. One son, Freddie, died in 1895 at the age of 7 months. Mrs. Rogers died in 1936.

Mr. Rogers lived in Madison county until 1928, when he moved to Lorimor. Prior to his death he had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Maud McMains and her husband.

He is survived by six children: Mrs. McMains, Mrs. Ruth Smith of Lorimor, Edwin Rogers of Morgan, Minn., Vernon Rogers of Lorimor, Frank Rogers of Indianola, and Mrs. Mildred Smith of Winterset. He also leaves one step-son, Harry Thomson of Des Moines, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the Fellowship church west of Macksburg on June 17, with the Rev. J. R. Kruegel officiating. Burial was made in the Hamblin cemetery.

James Henry Rogers

James Henry, second son of Lemuel and Elizabeth Calfee Rogers, was born in Putnam county, Missouri, January 6, 1856 and departed this life in Lorimor, June 15, 1941, at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 9 days.

He was deprived of a mother at the age of three years. He, with an older brother and sister and a baby brother three months old, went to live with their grandfather and grandmother Calfee who, with the aid of an aunt, cared for them. He is the last of his father’s first family.

The father married again to Susan Tenant and to this union five children were born, three sons and two daughters, only the sons remain. They are Frank Rogers of Humboldt, George W. of Mt. Ayr and Lemuel Rogers of Oakland, California.

In 1874 Mr. Rogers came to Madison county. On January 1, 1883 he was married to Mary Emma Thomson. To this union seven children were born, one son, Freddie, died February 10, 1895 at the age of seven months. His wife died January 10, 1936 at the age of 79. Six children remain to mourn their father’s death. Mrs. Maud McMains, Mrs. Ruth Smith of Lorimor; Edward Rogers of Morgan, Minn.; Vernon Rogers of Lorimor, Frank of Indianola and Mrs. Mildred Smith of Winterset; also one stepson, Harry Thomson of Des Moines, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

He and Mrs. Rogers lived in Madison County until January 10, 1928 when they moved to Lorimor really continued to reside. He made his home with the daughter, Maud McMains.

Funeral services were held at the Fellowship church near Macksburg at two p.m., Tuesday, June 17. Rev. J. R. Kruegal officiated and Wayne Crow sang, accompanied by Mrs. Crow. Pall bearers were Edwin Rogers, Vernon Rogers, Frank Rogers, Wilbur Smith, Alice Smith and Aetna McMains. Burial was made in Hamblin cemetery.
