Elderly Peru Resident Had Come to Madison County in Covered Wagon
Peru--(Special)--Mrs. Sarah Henthorne, a member of one of Madison county's earliest pioneer families, died here last Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Grimes. She was 91 years of age.
Mrs. Henthorne was born Oct. 1, 1849, in Putnam county, Indiana. She was the daughter of Phillip and Mary Garst, and came to Iowa with them 83 years ago, when she was 8 years of age, making the trip here by ox team and covered wagon. The family settled in Madison county, where she lived most of her life.
When a girl she united with the Christian church, and retained her membership throughout the years.
In 1868 she was married to Robert R. Secrease. They were the parents of four daughters, four of whom survive their mother. Mr. Secrease died in 1891.
In November of 1892 she was married to Marion D. Henthorne. They were the parents of one daughter, Mrs. Florence Grimes, with whom she had made her home for the past 15 years. Mr. Henthorne died in 1924.
The deceased leaves four daughters: Mrs. Bertha Bennett of Des Moines, Mrs. Mollie Davis of Burr Oak, Kan., Mrs. Hattie Fowler of Des Moines, and Mrs. Florence Grimes of Peru. She also leaves seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday from Kale's funeral home, in charge of the Rev. C. P. Shepard of the Truro Church of Christ. Burial was made in the Hartman cemetery near Truro.
