ANNA HARRIETT READ BOWLSBY

Anna Harriett Read daughter of Thomas and Ann Elizabeth Read was born August 16, 1868 in Scott township, Madison county, Iowa and passed to her Eternal Home at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Byron Johnston in Winterset on Monday January 19th at the age of 84 years, five months and three days.

She obtained her education in the rural schools of Madison county where she was a life-long resident.

She was converted and joined the Bethed Methodist church at the age of 16.

After three years of teaching school she was united in marriage to Walter H. Bowlsby on March 1st, 1891. To this union were born two daughters, Edith B. and Bessie.

In 1905 she resumed teaching and continued to do so until she entered the County Superintendent’s office in1924 where she served as deputy for twelve years.

She moved to Winterset in 1910 at which time she transferred her church membership to the Methodist church here where she was an active worker and faithful attendant, faithfully teaching a women’s Bible class for many years.

As long as health permitted she maintained her own home. For the past two years she has been cared for in the homes of her daughters.

She was a member of Pitzer women’s Relief Corps Number 117 for thirty-eight years serving in the capacity of Chaplain for a number of years and as president of that group for two years.

Mrs. Bowlsby was a devout Christian mother and gave herself wholly and unreservedly to the rearing of and providing for her family.

She was a loyal friend and neighbor.

She leaves to mourn her loss her two daughters, Edith B., wife of Rev. H. B. Fay of Ladora, Iowa and Bessie, Mrs. Byron Johnson of Winterset, four grandchildren, five great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 21 at 2:00 p.m. from the Winterset Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. W. A. Samp of Creston, assisted by the Rev. Glenn Parrott, Winterset pastor. She was tenderly laid to rest in the Winterset cemetery to await the glad Resurrection Morn.
