Earlham Library Obituaries, November 1936
Earlham, Iowa

Amy Ethel Beals, daughter of Thomas J. and Ruth J. Parker Beals, was born near Newton, Iowa, March 31, 1889. When she was a small child the family moved to North Branch, Kansas, and a year later removed to Bear Creek where they resided for seven years. In 1901 they came to Earlham, where Amy grew to womanhood.

She received her elementary and high school education in the Earlham schools and later attended Penn College, where she was graduated in 1916. For a few years she taught school, until her health failed.

After a brave struggle it was given her to again enjoy good health and she became Dr. Hamilton’s assistant, proving herself most helpful and efficient in this capacity. In fact, it might well be said of her whatever she undertook she proved herself capable of doing.

Amy was a lovely character. Wherever she went she made friends. She delighted in keeping and bringing joy to others. As a poet said of another we can say of her:

“None knew thee but to love thee, Nor named thee but to praise.”

Her bright, cheerful smile has brought sunshine to many a lonely discouraged heart. Her courage was indomitable. During the trying weeks of her last illness she was ever hopeful and courageous; but expressed her willingness and readiness to go if it be the will of her Maker.

Amy loved her church. In early childhood she opened her heart to her Lord and enthroned Him as her Savior and King, and ever remained true to the trust He left her.

Over a year ago she became the affianced bride of Dr. S. Milo Hamilton, but circumstances, over which they had no control, had made it inadvisable to consummate their plans.

On November 4, near the midnight hour the veil that hangs between the known and the unknown, was parted and Amy entered to join the loved ones gone before and to be forever at peace with her Lord.

Five times in this home have the ties been broken, an older sister, Rosa, in 1896, in her early childhood the youngest sister, Minnie, the father, and the sister Jennie.

Amy’s going leaves to mourn their loss, the frail mother, of Earlham, Iowa, the brother Will S. Beals, his wife, son and daugher (daughter) of Cheteck (Chetek), Wisconsin, a number of relatives, and an almost innumerable host of friends.

Funeral services in charge of Rev. Reece were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Earlham Friends church. Interment was in the Bear Creek cemetery.
