Long-Time Resident Came to Madison County in Covered Wagon
Mrs. Viola Z. Lyon of Scott township, died Sunday, June 25, at Memorial hospital in Winterset. She was 82 years of age.
Mrs. Lyon was born in Gaylord, Kan., Oct. 1, 1884, a daughter of Benjamin B. and Kathryn S. Hope. She was one of a family of eight children. The family moved from Kansas to Iowa in 1900, making the trip by covered wagon. They settled at Winterset until 1901, when they moved to a farm they had purchased east of Winterset.
She was married Jan. 18, 1905, at Peru, to Jacob A. Lyon. It was a double wedding, her brother and her husband's sister being married at the same time.
The remainder of her life was spent at her farm home in Scott township. She was a member of the Patterson Methodist church.
Mrs. Lyon was preceded in death by her husband, in 1962, and by two sons, Lester A. Lyon and Linden E. Lyon. She is survived by a son, Forrest Dale Lyon of Booneville; two daughters, Nalda B. Lyon at home, and Mrs. Audrey M. Woodruff of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a brother, H. Clyde Hope of Leon.
Funeral services were to be held this Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. James N. Louk. Burial was to be made in Union Chapel cemetery.
