NORMAN STREFFLER
Last Tributes Paid To Norman Streffler

Funeral services were held last Thursday from the First United Methodist church in Winterset for Norman E. Streffler, age 20, of Winterset, who had been fatally injured in a highway crash Tuesday, July 3, 1973.

The Rev. Paul Bousfield, pastor of the church, and the Rev. W. A. Samp of Winterset conducted the services. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.

Norman E. Streffler was a life-long resident of Winterset, and one of the most outstanding young men of the community. He was a son of Mrs. Marjorie Streffler, a brother of Mrs. Lauri Drake, and a grandson of Mrs. Laura Hollen, all of Winterset. He was born in Winterset Dec. 31, 1952.

He graduated from Winterset High School with the class of 1971, after an outstanding high school career in scholarship and athletics. He was a merit scholarship semi-finalist. He lettered for three years in football, and two in basketball. In football, he was an All-South Central conference back for two years.

For the last two years he had been attending Dartmouth college in Hanover, N.H., and had spent the fall quarter in Spain and the spring quarter in Oakland, Calif., tutoring under priviledged children through Dartmouth's foreign studies and extension programs.

A letter received by Mrs. Streffler from Dean Carroll W. Brewster of Dartmouth College, indicates the esteem in which Norman was held at that institution. After having been informed of the death, Dean Brewster wrote: "I write in sadness about the death of your son. Norman had a fine record at Dartmouth. He came from high school with the highest possible recommendations, both for intellect and for those personal qualities with which he later enriched the college. He was active in freshman and intramural athletics, and an energetic builder of the biggest bonfire ever for his Class of 1975. He met with Dean Albert Dickerson in March of his freshman year, who wrote a note to me calling Norman a 'very engaging, energetic fellow. I have encouraged him to run for the IDC' In other words, Dean Dickerson was urging him to serve as Advisor to freshmen. His faculty freshman advisor, Mr. Wallis, also praised his vibrant energy. Dartmouth was a better, happier place for his presence among us."
