John M. Smith, of Jackson township, father of Samuel C. & Ed. Smith, of Winterset, met with an accident last Saturday that has resulted fatally. He was driving some horses through a gate when one of them wheeled and gave him a severe kick in the abdomen. He passed away about 6 o'clock.
Mr. Smith moved to Madison county from the eastern part of the state some 11 or 12 years ago. He leaves a wife and 4 sons, all living in this county, except one son, who lives in Des Moines.

His funeral will be Thursday, at 2:30 p.m., at the Presbyterian church.
