WILL J. SMITH DIED HERE ON THURSDAY

Well-Known Farmer Had Been Resident of Madison County Since 1886

Will J. Smith, a resident of this community for over 58 years, died at the Winterset hospital early Tuesday morning, Aug. 15, at the age of 80 years. His health had been on the decline for some time and his death followed a severe heart attack early Sunday morning. Mr. Smith lived in the West Star neighborhood for many years, until his health compelled him to give up active work.

He was born in Brookline, a suburb of Boston, Mass., on April 7, 1864, the son of John McMurray and Jane Courtney Smith. In 1869 he came with his parents to Madison county, Iowa, where they resided near the town of Andrew. In 1886 the family moved to a farm seven miles west of Winterset.

On September 3, 1892 he married Sadie Ford, the daughter of a pioneer family of the West Star neighborhood, and they began housekeeping on a farm near the home place. Here they resided until a few years ago, when they moved to a farm south of Winterset. Two years ago, they observed their 50th wedding anniversary, with their six children and most of their grandchildren present.

Near relatives surviving Mr. Smith are his wife and their six children: Glen of Wausaukee, Wis., Mrs. Wayne Wright of Grimes, Mrs. Frank Clampitt of Earlham, Frank Smith of Norwalk, Mrs. Frank Black and Mrs. Glenn Shoemaker of Winterset. He also leaves a brother, Ed M. Smith of Winterset and 12 grandchildren. Two grandsons are in the armed forces: St./Sgt. Phil Wright, a radio operator and gunner on a bomber in Italy, and M./Sgt. Dale Smith of the U.S. marines, who is now stationed in San Diego, Calif. Two brothers have preceded him in death. The other grandchildren are Mrs. LeRoy Renfro of Des Moines, Keith Smith of Wausaukee, Wisc., Barbara and Shirley Clampitt of Earlham, Donna, Laurence, and Darlene Smith of Norwalk, and Donal and Nadene Brandt and Jimmy Shoemaker of Winterset.

Funeral services will be held at the Anderson Home for Funerals Thursday, Aug. 17th, at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. W. A. Samp. The Masonic order will have charge of services at the grave.
