WILLIS B. SMITH, LEE TOWNSHIP RESIDENT, DIED JULY 31ST

Van Meter (Special)--Aug. 5

Willis B. Smith, well known farmer of Lee township, southeast of Van Meter, died at the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines Monday evening, July 31st, after being ill for some time with heart trouble.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Fisher funeral home. The services were conducted by the Rev. Dean Chapman, pastor of the Wesley Methodist church in Des Moines. He was laid to rest in the Booneville cemetery. The pallbearers were cousins: Ray, Don and Paul Spencer of West Des Moines, Holley Smith of Amboy, Ill., Earl Norman of Mitchellville, and Ira Spencer.

Willis Brott Smith, son of Ira S. and Carrie E. Smith, was born in Lee township, Madison county, on July 28, 1889, and passed away at the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines, July 31, 1944, at the age of 55 years and 3 days. His entire life was spent in Lee township.

On December 30, 1908, he was united in marriage to Mae Wesslund.

His father, mother, a brother, Alva H., and a sister, Mrs. Ella Mae Holcomb preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, a brother, H. R. Smith of Booneville, a sister, Mrs. J. M. Norman of Houston, Texas, two nephews, Ira S. Smith of Fort Riley, Kan., and Fletcher C. Norman of Houston, Texas, three nieces, Mrs. Robert Ripperberger of Indianola, Mrs. Everett Lowe of Des Moines, and Mrs. Virgil Hilman of Dallas, Texas.
