Doctor Griffith was born at Lineville on Sept. 19, 1861, the son of Margaret Summers and John S. Griffith. His early life was spent there and at Cleopatra and Trenton, Mo., where he attended the public schools and worked in his father's brickyard.
He received his medical degree from the Keokuk College of Medicine and Surgery in 1887. He practiced at Lucerne, Mo., for one year, then at Duncombe, Ia., for six months, before coming to Peru in July of 1892.

In his home also was reared a niece, Hilda Maxwell McKee, who died in 1926. Several other nieces and nephews also made temporary residence with his family.
In addition to the one daughter living, he is survived by a grandson, Robert Ray of Peru, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Greenman of Metzger, Ore.
