SARAH IRENE NUNAMACKER

Sarah Irene Nunamacker was born in Janesville, Wisc., October 31, 1842 and passed away at her home in Earlham, Iowa, February 12, 1935-words that measure the span of a long life-nearly a century of time.

And what a beautiful, useful, eventful life! Beginning in the territorial days of the prairie country, meeting its privations and toil, she grew strong, self reliant and helpful in the home and community. She was the only daughter of Stephen C and Ellis Douglass. She had four brothers, the eldest of whom died in the union army, the youngest in the earliest days of Earlham, and John and Bradley with whom many years of her life were spent.

She was married to Tobias Nunamacker December 31, 1867 and together they came to Iowa, establishing a home in the recently laid-out village of Earlham, soon after the railroad was built this far. Unto this union came two daughters. Hers truly was a “house by the side of the road” living for fifty years in the same home near the business center, where she gladly, cheerily shared what she had with every man, women and child that had need.

In her early life she and her husband united with the Baptist church, later becoming members of the Church of Christ in De Soto during their three years of residence there. Afterward she affiliated with the local Presbyterian church until the Church of Christ was established here, of which she was a charter member. She was a most devoted loyal worker and a regular attendant at the Bible school and church services until past ninety years of age. She was deeply interested in all work of the local churches and of the world wide spread of the gospel.

Her husband died in 1899, after which her home was with her aged mother and the brothers.

She was keenly alert and interested in the changing times and conditions of progress, and enjoyed the modern comforts and world contacts these things brought to her. As friend, neighbor, mother, Christian-to know her was to love her.

She is survived by her daughters, Sarah Nunamacker of Earlham, Mrs. Minnie Emms of Perry, and a granddaughter Mrs. Gaylord Anderson of Perry.
