DORIS E. NELSON

Doris Nelson was born in Earlham, Iowa, on June 6, 1914, daughter of Powers and Nora Mae Clayton Inman. She died September 5, 2006, at the age of 92 years, 3 months, at Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset, Iowa.

Doris graduated from Earlham High School in 1932. On February 15, 1936 Doris married Willard Price in Adel. This union was blessed with five children, Sybil, Karen, Janice, Gene and Jim.

During World War II, Doris and Bill moved with their family to Seattle where Bill worked in the naval shipyards. In 1944, after living there two years, they returned to Earlham. Bill took up his former job of butchering with his father, and in, 1947, died of tetanus.

In May of 1957, Doris married Jess Nelson, and he and his three daughters, Geri, Maxine, and Carol, became part of her family. Doris and Jess continued to live in Earlham and raise their family. Upon Jess’s retirement in 1973, they moved to Seattle, Washington. In 1976, they moved back to Iowa, where Jess died in July of 1985. Doris moved back to Earlham in 1987, where she lived until her death.

Doris spent her life doing what she loved best—being a wife, a mom, a grandma, a great-grandma, a sister, and a friend. She fully enjoyed life’s adventures, and was willing to try anything her family proposed—motorcycle riding, motorized parachuting, flying in a bi-plane, snowmobiling, snow tubing, camel riding, traveling—and a lot of these after turning eighty! She was always, always doing things to help other people. Whatever needed to be done, she was glad to help.

She also enjoyed her time alone watching the birds and squirrels, gardening, pulling weeds, cracking walnuts, and reading the Bible. A strong faith in God brought joy to Doris in her every-day life and sustained her through the difficult times. She was a life-long member, as well as the oldest member, of the Earlham Friends Church.

Doris is survived by her daughter Sybil Witt of Earlham; daughter Karen Barnett and husband Butch of Earlham; daughter Jan Duncan of Seattle, Washington; son Gene Price and wife Faye of Easton, Washington; son Jim Price and wife Felicia of Earlham; stepdaughter Geri Williamson and husband John of Earlham; stepdaughter Maxine Fuller and husband LeRoy of Earlham; stepdaughter Carol Cady and husband Mike of Menomonie, Wisconsin; brother Frank Inman and wife Erma of Earlham; sister Blanche McGrady of Mason City; 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Doris’s greeters in heaven will be her parents; her first husband, Willard Price; her second husband, Jess Nelson; brothers Floyd and Glen Inman; two grandsons, and one great-grandson.

Note: Burial in the Earlham, Cemetery.
