W. H. MAXWELL Of Winterset Dies

Madison County lost one of its most widely known residents Thursday, Sept. 19, 1957, in the death of William H. Maxwell which occurred in Memorial hospital at Winterset. He was 77 years of age, and had been in failing health for several years.

Mr. Maxwell's active life was spent in the auctioneering field, and he was especially concerned with horses and mules. For 20 years he was a member of the Iowa State fair board, and was superintendent of the horse and mule division. He was connected with the state fair for more than half a century.

He was widely known through southern Iowa as an auctioneer. For many years he served as auctioneer at the horse and mule sales in Des Moines and in Omaha, becoming known in the field throughout the midwest.

Mr. Maxwell was a life-long resident of Madison county. At one time he was engaged in the garage business in Winterset, and he was one of the group which originally organized the North Sales barn here. He also owned and operated farms here.

He was born in South township on July 29, 1880, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Maxwell. As a young man he was married to Lillian Campbell. Her death occurred about seven years ago. Subsequently he married Mary E. Doyle, who survives him.

In addition to his wife; he leaves a sister, Mrs. Bessie Baird, of Glendale, Calif.

Funeral services were held Saturday from the Richards Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
