Vernie Estella Berry Lewis, a member of the Kasson community most of her life, died Saturday, October 27, 1973 at Villa West Health Care Center in Winterset at the age of 92.
Mrs. Lewis was born March 3, 1881, at the home of her parents, Jacob and Anna Moffitt, east of Macksburg. Her marriage to William Edward Berry occurred March 1, 1899. Four children were born to the couple. Mr. Berry died October 28, 1909.
Mrs. Lewis was married April 23, 1913 to John Clyde Lewis, who preceded her in death January 10, 1919. They had two children.
Affiliated with the First Christian Church since age 16, Mrs. Lewis was also a charter member of the Kasson Firendship Club and a member of the Lorimor Legion Auxiliary.
Mrs. Lewis lived alone on her farm until 1968 when she moved to Winterset.
Surviving Mrs. Lewis are three sons: Milo Berry of Lorimor, Herbert Berry of Des Moines and Claude Lewis of Cedar Rapids; three daughters, Mrs. Alvan Gibbs of Ames, Mrs. Audre Kramer of Creston and Mrs. Fred Hammans of Lorimor; thirteen grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren and four great, great grandchildren.
Also surviving is a brother, Everett Moffitt of Des Moines and a sister, Mrs. Allie Lecocq of Winterset.
Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Elvin Moffitt and a sister, Maggie Handley.
Funeral services were conducted October 30, 1973 at 2:00 p.m. from the United Methodist Church of Lorimor with burial at the Lorimor Cemetery. Officiating was the Rev. M. Stanley Ballard.

WINTERSET—Mrs. Vernie Estella Lewis, 92, of the Lorimor area died Saturday night at the Villa West nursing home in Winterset.
Mrs. Lewis was born March 3, 1891, the daughter of Jacob and Anna Moffit. She was married to William E. Berry March 1, 1899. Mr. Berry died Oct. 28, 1909.
On April 23, 1913, she was married to John C. Lewis, who died Jan. 10, 1919.
A lifelong resident of Madison county near Lorimor, Mrs. Lewis was affiliated with the First Christian church.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Lorimor United Methodist church. Rev. M. Stanley Ballard will officiate, with burial to be in the Lorimor cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Watts-Soll funeral home in Lorimor from 12 noon to service time at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Mrs. Lewis is survived by her children, Milo Berry of Lorimor, Herbert Berry of Des Moines, Mrs. Ada Berry Gibbs of Ames, Mrs. Anna Berry Kramer of Creston, John C. Lewis of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Fred (Rowena) Hammans of Lorimor; 13 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Everett Moffit of Des Moines; and a sister, Mrs. Allie LeCocq of Winterset. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.
