A. W. HIATT OF PERU DIED ON SATURDAY

Was Son of Famous Pioneer Family in Madison County

A. W. Hiatt, son of the founder of the town of Peru and nephew of the discoverer of the Delicious apple, died at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines last Saturday. He was 87 years of age.

Mr. Hiatt was the son of Aaron and Sarah Hiatt, and was born in Peru on Dec. 14, 1854. His father came here from Indiana, and founded the original town of Peru, naming it from the town in Indiana from which he came. His uncle was Jesse Hiatt, who made history in this county when he nursed an apple sprout on his farm into the new fruit called the Iowa Delicious.

Mr. Hiatt had been a member of the Christian church since youth. He was married to Martha McKee on Dec. 14, 1876. They were the parents of four children, all of whom survive their father. They are: Oren Hiatt of Spokane, Wash., Clifford Hiatt of Peru; Mrs. Maggie Brown of Des Moines; and Mrs. Nora Jorgensen of Peru. He also leaves three grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the Peru Methodist church Sunday, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. J. A. Walls. Burial was made in the Peru cemetery.
