Native of England, Had Lived in Winterset for Past 14 Years
Mrs. Thomas Ham, a resident of Winterset for the past 14 years, died at her home here last Thursday at the age of 83 years.
Mrs. Ham was a native of England, where she was born on Aug. 31, 1859, in the town of Puritan, in Somersetshire, as Ann Arthur, daughter of Frederick and Susan Arthur. There she was married, on Aug. 7, 1881, to Thomas Ham, of South Brent, Somersetshire. They came to America and settled on a farm near Solon, in this state.
After a few years at Solon, they moved to Madison county where they farmed for many years. They were the parents of 11 children, the oldest of whom, Sarah, died in infancy. Mr. Ham died 13 years ago, just one year after they moved to Winterset.
Mrs. Ham is survived by ten children: Frank Ham of Phoenix, Arizona, James Ham of Solon, Fred Ham and Mrs. Mabel Nelson of Lorimor, Mrs. Emma Edwards of Sedalia, Missouri, William Ham of Newton, Mrs. Blanche Livingston of Orient, and Ralph, Jesse and Thomas, Jr., of Winterset. She also leaves 31 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted from the Winterset Methodist church Sunday, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. W. A. Samp. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
