MAURICE H. STUMP
Search Ends Long Search For Recluse

The year-long search for the elusive recluse who had been hiding in the woods in the DeSoto-Van Meter area ended last Thursday when the body of Maurice H. Stump of DeSoto was found in a vacant farm house near West Des Moines.

Stump's death was ruled a suicide. A 12-guage shotgun was found beside the body.

Stump was 39 years of age. His early life was spent at DeSoto. About 10 years ago he started vanishing into the timber for extended spells. This last time, he had vanished more than a year ago.

During the past year Dallas and Madison county officers, aided by state police, had conducted repeated wide-spread searches in an attempt to apprehend Stump, but he had always succeeded in escaping.

His body was taken to the Fisher Funeral home in Van Meter.
