Daughter of Founder of That Community; Was 75 Years Old
Mrs. Onie B. Hixson, well known pioneer resident of Macksburg, died Monday night, Feb. 22nd at the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines. Mrs. Hixson who was 75 years of age, had been a patient at the hospital since September 14th.
Mrs. Hixson was a daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Mack, pioneer settlers of Grand River township, who came to this county in 1858, and for whom the town of Macksburg was named. She was the last remaining member of her family, but leaves a companion, Mrs. Grace Perry, to whom she has been a "mother" for the past ten years. She also leaves a number of nieces and nephews., and several younger people who had made their home with her for several years. Mrs. Minnie DeMar of Winterset was one of these.
Onie B. Mack was born on the Mack farm southeast of Macksburg June 29, 1867. She lived in or near Macksburg most of her life. He husband died January 22, 1919, and since then she had traveled for many years, residing for short periods of time in California, etc.
Her funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Macksburg, Wednesday, Feb. 24th, at 10:30 a.m. and the body was taken to the Glendale Abbey in Des Moines, where brief services were held at 3 p.m. She was buried in the Glendale cemetery beside her husband. Mrs. Onie B. Hixson, 75, of Macksburg, Ia., died at the Iowa Lutheran hospital shortly after noon Monday. She had been in the hospital since Sept. 14, 1942.
Mrs. Hixson, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Mack of Macksburg, had been district secretary of the Woman’s Home Missionary society and wrote the first-by-laws for the district secretaries, adopted by the national organization.
She was the widow of Lew H. Hixson, who died in 1919. Both were active in Grace Methodist church, where both had been Sunday school teachers. Mr. Hixson was in the manufacturing business.
Services will be at the Macksburg Methodist church, after which short services will be held at the abbey in Glendale cemetery.

Mrs. Onie B. Hixson, age 75, of Macksburg, died at the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines late Monday evening, February 22. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Macksburg, Wednesday, February 24, at 10:30 a. m. Rev. Miss Alta Nichols officiated at the funeral assisted by the pastor, Rev. J. E. Englund. Music was presented by Mrs. Frank Loomis, Mrs. Thomas Baker, Mr. Jay Stelle and Mr. Jay Thompson, accompanied by Miss Vernie Busch, and Rev. and Mrs. Paul Long sang a duet. The pallbearers were C. Dean Herren, Glen Wolfe, F. G. Barnes, Coyt R. Herren, Alpha Wolfe, and Russell Wolfe. Interment was made in the Glendale Abbey Mausoleum in Glendale Cemetery, in Des Moines.
Onie B. Hixson, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. H. Mack, was born June 29, 1867, in Grand River township. In the spring of 1874, she came with her parents to Macksburg, the town that was named for her father, and had resided there at different times during her life. She graduated from the Macksburg high school, and later attended both Simpson college and Drake University for a short time, but was forced to discontinue because of poor health. On March 7, 1894, she was united in marriage with Lew H. Hixson, and they made their home in Harvey, Ill. In October 1901 they moved to Des Moines, where they lived until his death on January 22, 1919. In 1929 Mrs. Hixson went to California where she lived for five years, and while she was there she met Mrs. Grace Berry to whom she has given a home since 1932, bringing her back to Macksburg with her in November 26, 1934. On September 14, 1942 Mrs. Hixson was taken to the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines, suffering with a cancer in her face which spread all through her body. Mrs. Grace Berry and Mrs. Hixson’s great niece, Miss Esther Wolfe, cared for her throughout her sickness. Mrs. Minnie De Mar who had lived with her in her home in past years, helped with her care at times.
Mrs. Hixson was the last remaining member of her family. She leaves her companion, Mrs. Grace Berry, her brother-in-law, F. C. Herren, many nieces and nephews and their families, other relatives and a host of friends.

Barnes, Corning; Mr. and Mrs. Alpho Wolfe, and Mrs. Alpha Wolfe, and Miss Esther Wolfe, Van Meter; Mrs. Alfred Young, Earlham; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Wolfe, Cromwell; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wolfe, Dexter; Mr. and Mrs Raymond Wolfe, Orient; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Eyerly, Mrs. Jennie Thrift, Mrs. Minnie De Mar, Mrs. Hattie De Mar, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Austin, all of Winterset.
