Death of Mrs. Rhoda Moorman

Mrs. Rhoda Moorman, the aged mother of Brooks Moorman and Mrs. Peter Turner died at the former home in this city on last Thursday at the age of ninety one years. Mrs. Moorman was one of the very early settlers of the south part of this county. More particulars of her life will appear in an obituary elsewhere in this paper.

Mrs. Rhoda A. Moorman

Rhoda A. Bryan was born in Green county, Ohio Oct. 13 1823 and died Nov. 12, 1914 in Winterset, Iowa, at the home of her son, Brooks Moorman, at the age of 91 years and 20 days.

She was married to Thomas C. Moorman near Johnstown, Ohio Dec 1, 1841. They resided in this vicinity until the spring of 1856, when they moved to Iowa in a covered wagon, and settled in Walnut township, Madison county. They lived in a log home at first and experienced all the pleasures of pioneer life, proving a good neighbor and truly devoted as a wife and mother; hospitable especially to travelers and ever careful to entertain strangers.

To Mr. and Mrs. Moorman, nine children were born, 6 sons and three daughters: four are dead, Thomas D., James W., and Mary R. died in infancy, and Eli H. of Winterset, died April 15, 1900, age 45. Those living are Ellis G., of San Antonio, Texas; A. Brooks and Mrs. Peter Turner of Winterset; Mrs. Wm. Gray of Portland, Ore.; and Horace D. of Butler, Mo. Besides their own children, a number of homeless children were given a home and schooled and cared for. There are 27 grand children and 24 great grand children.

Her husband died in his own home in Winterset, March 27, 1903, at the age of 84 years. After the death of her companion, she made her home with her son, A. Brooks Moorman and her daughter, Mrs. Peter Turner, except for two and a half years she kept her own home.

She was a member of the Friend church at Oak Run in the south part of Madison county, and lived to he death a consistent Christian life. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Hohanshelf from the M. E. church at two p. m. Saturday, Rev. Davis of the Church of Christ assisting.
