HARRISON DAWES, Grinnell

Harrison Griffin Dawes, 94, of Grinnell and formerly of Winterset, died Jan. 25, 2005, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gordon Packard and Deacon Diane Eberhart officiating. Burial was at the Spirit Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Harrison Dawes was born Dec. 9, 1910, in Kirkland, N.Y., to Richard and Clara (Griffin) Dawes. He received his formal education in the Clinton, N.Y., public school system, graduating from high school in 1930. He then attended Hamilton College and Taylor University, graduating from Morningside College in 1937. He also graduated from Garrett Theological Seminary in 1943. He was united in marriage to Donnis V. Horine on Feb. 18, 1933, in Point Isabelle, Ind. Harrison served as pastor at several United Methodist churches in Iowa, including in the towns of Superior/Montgomery, Sioux City, Quimby/Goodhope, Sutherland/Moneta, Eagle Grove, Estherville, Clinton and Storm Lake, retiring in 1976. Following his first retirement, he served the Rossie United Church of Christ from 1976–96. He was involved in the Okoboji United Methodist Campsite, serving as dean of several camps.

He is survived by his wife, Donnis, of Winterset; two sons, Gilbert Dawes of St. Charles and Delbert Dawes of Grinnell; and seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.
