Percy G. Benge, aged 23, of Winterset, drowned Saturday while swimming at Clearwater beach, just east of Booneville.
The beach is a private swimming area at an old gravel pit. It is a supervised area, and life-guards were on duty.
Benge had just entered the water, with two companions. He was swimming between them, in deep water, when he suddenly went down. They started diving for him immediately, but he was not found until too late.
Percy G. Benge was born at St. Charles on Sept. 2, 1947, a son of Perry Fay and Lois Martin Benge. His life-time was spent in this county. He graduated from Winterset high school with the class of 1966, and attended Centerville Junior college, at Centerville.
He was employed in construction work with the Chicago-Northwestern Railway Co.
At the time of his death he was engaged to be married to Beverly A. Benson of Winterset.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fay Benge of Winterset; a brother, Pat Benge of Winterset; three sisters, Mrs. Peggy A. Strable of St. Charles, Mrs. Pam D. Brown and Paula E. Benge, both of Winterset; and his great grandmother, Mrs. Dollie Hulbert of Winterset.
Funeral services were held this Tuesday from the Collins funeral home here, conducted by the Rev. Walter A. Samp of Winterset. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
