81-Year-Old Resident Lived in Madison County for 60 Years
Mrs. Henry S. Ely, resident of Madison county for 60 years, died Monday at the Winterset hospital after an illness of several weeks. She was 81 years of age.
Mrs. Ely was born at Lancaster, N. Y., on April 27, 1862, the daughter of William and Sarah Clark. She was the former Nellie E. Clark. She was married at Lancaster on Sept. 28, 1883, to Henry S. Ely. They came to Iowa after the wedding and settled on a farm in Douglas township where they lived 10 years. In 1893 they moved to Winterset. For the past 50 years she had lived in the Ely residence on North First street.
Mrs. Ely was the mother of six children, three of whom preceded her in death. One son, Ray Seldon Ely, died in 1905; and a daughter, Esther, died in 1927. Another son, Clarence Ely, died in Denver, Colo., Sunday, just one day before his mother.
She is survived by her husband; one son, Ralph Ely of Creston; two daughters, Mrs. Florence Flood of Park City, Mont., and Blanche Ely of Winterset; and her granddaughter, Joan Ely of Denver. Her two brothers also preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held this Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Winterset Methodist church, and burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery.
