Idaletta Mekemson Spencer was born December 27, 1864, at Biggsville, Illinois, the daughter of Andrew and Eleanor Mekemson. She was called to rest on November 1, 1945.

On November 3, 1886, she was united in marriage to James Harve Spencer who preceded her in death on August 21, 1933. To this union were born eleven children, all of whom survive. They are:

Frank Robert Spencer, Des Moines; James A. Spencer, Woodward, Iowa; Lois Mills, (Mrs. Jay G. Mills) Flint, Michigan; Lloyd H. Spencer, Iowa City, Iowa; Miron L. Spencer, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Herbert R. Spencer, Earlham; Thomas D. Spencer, Cordova, Illinois; William M. Spencer, Oskaloosa, Iowa; Howard M. Spencer, Dawson, Iowa; Mary Beeson, (Mrs. Wilbur Beeson) Earlham; Dorothy Stotts, (Mrs. Fred Stotts), Wichita, Kansas.

There are twenty-two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

In her youth Mrs. Spencer united with the South Henderson church, one of the pioneer United Presbyterian churches. Moving to Cedarville, Ohio in 1890, the family affiliated with the United Presbyterian church of that community. The Spencer’s moved to the Pitzer neighborhood in December of 1900 and this has been their church home since that time.

A woman of deep personal faith and sincere religious conviction, Mrs. Spencer was always a faithful follower of her Lord and a loyal worker in His kingdom on earth. During her years in this church she served in the Women’s Missionary Society and aided in the work of the Sabbath School as well as in every other activity of the church and community.

In addition to her family and relatives there are countless friends and neighbors who have known her loving kindness. In spite of her many duties at home she was ever ready and willing to help someone else. We mourn her passing but rejoice that she has been called to her Heavenly Home.

All of the Spencer children were present at the funeral services, together with most of their families. Other relatives present were: Mrs. Hattie Jessup of Diagonal, and Mrs. Jessie Amick of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd McCorkle of Redfield; Mr. and Mrs. Walter McCorkle of Winterset; and Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Hoeness of Winterset.

Funeral services were conducted at the Pitzer United Presbyterian church Sunday, November 4 by Rev. W. W. Orr of the Westminister United Presbyterian church of Des Moines. Burial was in Jackson township cemetery.
