Clifton Mitchell Crushed To Death In Corn Elevator Last Friday

Clifton Mitchell, young farmer living seven miles north of Winterset, was crushed to death last Friday morning, when his clothing caught in the tumbling rod of a corn elevator he was operating in his barn lot, dragging him into the machine. He was 37 years of age.

Mitchell was crushed between the machine and the ground, and died of a broken neck, crushed chest, broken arm and leg. He was working alone at the time. His wife, who was near the house, heard him cry out. She rushed to his aid, but he had been fatally injured by the time she could shut off the power.

Mr. Mitchell was a native of the Pitzer neighborhood, where he was born 37 years ago, the son of William and Carrie Mitchell. As a child he moved with his parents to the Hebron neighborhood in Adair county. He spent his entire life in Adair county, until three years ago, when he moved north of Winterset.

He was married in April, 1929, to Doris Walker. They were the parents of three children, Wendell, now 14, Dale, aged 12, and Patty, aged 10.

In addition to the wife, the three children, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Carrie Mitchell of Greenfield; two brothers, Lloyd and Clem Mitchell, both of Greenfield; and a sister, Mrs. Pearl Huffman of Des Moines.

Funeral rites were held Sunday from his home in charge of the Rev. Wesley J. Walker of St. Francis, Minn., followed by services at 2:30 p.m. from the Fairview Methodist church, in charge of the Rev. A. R. Weed of Tingley and the Rev. Arthur Henry of Earlham.

Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
