Mrs. Ellen Kellogg

Mrs. Ellen Kellogg passed away at her home in Scott township, on August 4, 1920, after an illness of 19 months, in which she suffered as but few are called upon to do.

She was the oldest child of John and Permelia James and was born in Douglas township, Madison county, Iowa, March 31, 1860. While yet a child, her parents moved to the vicinity of the Buffalo Mill, where she grew to womanhood. On April 12, 1876, she was married to J. M. Kellogg. They moved to a farm in Scott township which has since been her home. To this union were born two sons, S. F. who has always lived at home, and since the death of his father, Christmas 1903, has superintended the farm, and C. A. of Odebolt, Iowa, who has paid frequent visits to his mother's bedside and who was with her when she passed away. She also leaves four brothers, Granvil of Billings, Montana; Louis of Buhl, Idaho; Albert of Huston, Idaho, and Annon of Winterset. Her sister, Alice Bosley, passed away at Harris, Colorado several years ago and Alonzo, her youngest brother, at Winterset on July 24, 1915.

In 1879 she and her husband joined the U. B. church at Buffalo and a few years later moved their membership to the Providence class at Holliwell. Since the going down of that church in 1895, she has not been affiliated with any church but has been a regular attendant of the Primitive Baptist church and a firm believer in their faith and practice.

Some time before her death, she chose the hymns "Asleep in Jesus", "How Firm a Foundation", and "Gathering Home" and requested them to be sung at her funeral, and also made the request that Elder M. E. Young of Indianola, a former pastor of the Primitive Baptist church preach her funeral. She was 60 years, 4 months, 4 days old at the time of her death, and has spent her entire life within three miles of Winterset.

This is a brief sketch of a beautiful life whose finest qualities of love and helpfulness to others are indelibly written in the hearts of many, many loving friends and neighbors.
