Page 1Aged Resident Is Killed By Train
Thomas L. Jones, an aged resident of Winterset, was killed by a Burlington train, at Osceola, last Wednesday evening, August 5th, about 8:30 o’clock. Mr. Jones, who was 84 years of age, had gone to Osceola, on Tuesday, and it is thought that he was waiting to take a train to Burlington where two sons resided.
The particulars of the accident are not known, but it is thought that an idle engine running to Creston, hit him. He was seen near the depot, when No. 9 pulled out at 8:20 o’clock and he may have been killed when he attempted to board that train. The body was brought to Winterset, and funeral services were held at the Ramsey Richards funeral home, Thursday afternoon, August 6th, at 4:30 o’clock, and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
Mr. Jones is survived by nine children: Mrs. Carrie Reason and Mrs. Nettie Thomas, both of Peoria, Illinois; Mrs. Mahlon Grimes of Storm Lake, Frank Jones, Beverly Jones and Mrs. Essie Clark of Burlington, Mrs. Vera Stewart of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Mrs. Tom Guiberson and Mrs. Henry Joeckel of Winterset. A more complete account of his life may be found in the mortuary column.

Thomas L. Jones
Thomas L. Jones was the son of Lige and Nancy Armstrong Jones, both natives of the state of Kentucky. Mr. Jones was born May 3, 1847 near Springfield, in Mannard county, Illinois, and died in Osceola, Iowa, August 5, 1931, being 84 years, 3 months and 2 days of age at the time of his death.
When a young man he was married to Miss Kate Shroder, of Havanna, Illinois, and two daughters were born to them. They are Mrs. Carrie Reason and Mrs. Nettie Thomas, both of Peoria, Illinois.
After the death of his wife he came to Iowa and later married Miss Rachael Downing of Winterset, who preceded him in death, passing away February 6, 1918. To this union eight children were born, all of whom are living but one who died in infancy. They are Mrs. Mahlon Grimes of Storm Lake, Frank Jones, Beverly Jones and Mrs. Essie Clark, all of Burlington, Iowa; Mrs. Vera Stewart of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Mrs. Tom Guiberson and Mrs. Henry Joeckel of Winterset, and a number of grandchildren. Besides these whose names have been mentioned are numerous other relatives and friends.
At a very young age Mr. Jones was left an orphan and was taken into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Beverly Watkins at the age of ten years, and from this home grew to manhood. One of the virtues which characterized his life was his kindness to the aged and to children.
Services were held in his respect from the Ramsay-Richards Funeral home Thursday afternoon, August 6th at 4:30 o’clock in charge of the Rev. John T. Hall, pastor of the Baptist church. Interment was in the Winterset cemetery.
