Pioneer Settler Had Moved to California Over 50 Years Ago
The long and useful career of one of Madison county's most distinguished former residents ended at Los Angeles, Calif., Sunday in the death of Cal Ogburn.
Although Mr. Ogburn had left Madison county more than 50 years ago, he was well known here. He never lost his interest in the community where he spent his pioneer childhood days. During the past year he gave active support to the Madison County Memorial hospital project, and made the first donation, amounting to $400.
A few years ago he edited a series of articles published in the Madisonian, concerning the pioneer days in the Elm Grove community of this county.
Mr. Ogburn was 90 years of age at the time of his death. He was a member of a pioneer family in the Elm Grove neighborhood, and the memories of his boyhood life in the wilderness that was then Madison county remained clear and vivid.
As a young man he was married here, and he and his wife both taught school in Madison county. He later entered the Methodist ministry and moved to California more than a half century ago, where the remainder of his life was spent.
His wife died four years ago. His nearest surviving relatives are a son, Bert Ogburn of Phoenix, Ariz., a half-brother in Texas, a granddaughter, Mrs. Doris Slotter of Mt. Pleasant, Ia., and a grandson, Donald Ogburn in Dakota.
Funeral services and burial were to be held in California.
