1977Al Jones Dies At Age 65
Walter E. "Al" Jones, a businessman on the Winterset square for a total of 46 years and active in numerous community affairs, died Wednesday January 19, 1977, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 65.
Born June 21, 1911, in Harlington, Nebraska, Al Jones was the son of Ed and Lettie Cox Jones. His marriage to Thelma Tollenaar took place October 19, 1952 in the Little Brown Church of Nashua, Iowa.
A barber and race horse jockey in his youth in Nebraska, Al Jones opened a barber shop in Winterset in the 1930s until 1959, interrupted by service with the U.S. Army during World War II. He farmed part-time in Winterset after the war and had been a full-time insurance salesman since 1960.
A member of the First Christian Church of Winterset where he was an Honorary Elder, Al Jones was a Mason, a member of the Lion's Club, past president of the Lakeview Country Club, Commander of American Legion Green Rogers Post 184, chairman of the Winterset Utility Board of Trustees, a Rotary member and Worthy Patron of Eastern Star.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma; one daughter, Mrs. Craig (Jo Ann) Slayton of Coralville, Iowa; a brother, Millard Jones of Lakeland, Florida and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Funeral services for W. E. "Al" Jones were conducted Friday, January 21, at 2:00 p.m. from the First Christian Church of Winterset, Rev. Paul Bousfield officiating. Burial was made at the Winterset Cemetery.
