Ralph C. Johnson, 98, of Afton died of complications of pneumonia Dec. 2, 1998, at the Afton Care Center.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 5, at Powers Funeral Home in Afton with the Rev. William Richardson officiating. Burial was at North McDonald Cemetery in Madison County.
Ralph Johnson was born Jan. 12, 1900 in Madison County to Andrew Cleveland and Rosa Pearl (Jern) Johnson. He was educated in Winterset area country schools. He first married Lillie Fae Huff in Madison County. She died in 1933. He next married Mabel Agnes (Thayer) Givan in Madison County. She died in 1944. His third marriage was to Velma McReynolds in Adel. She died in 1958. He then married Edna Paullin Scarberry on Dec. 12, 1970, in Mr. Ayr. Ralph farmed most of his life. He also was employed with the railroad, a monument company and at a rock quarry. He lived in Madison County until moving to Lorimor in the mid 1960s. In 1970, he moved to a farm south of Macksburg. He later moved to Afton in 1989. He was a former member of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Winterset.
He was preceded in death by a daughter and a stepson.
He is survived by his wife of Afton; one son, Max Johnson of Afton; one daughter Lenore Little of Winterset; six stepson, Dale Overholser (wife Mildred) of Norwalk, Randy Scarberry of Rockford, Ill., Ron Scarberry of Des Moines, Rick Scarberry of Afton, Brad Scarberry of Creston and Richard McReynolds of Sidney; five stepdaughters, Patsy Britain (husband Butch) of Redding, Caif.; Della Orndorf (husband Marvin) of Princeton, Mo., Connie Farlow (husband Jim) of Osceola, Rhonda Elledge (husband Robert Kiser)of Medford, Ors., Cindy Lee (husband Wayne) of Bedford; one sister, Lucille Nystrom of Boone; five grandchildren; many step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
