LYLE NATHANIEL THOMPSON

Lyle Nathaniel Thompson, son of John Jonathan and Lulu Belle (Bechtol) Thompson, was born July 10, 1902 at Earlham, Iowa, and passed away March 21, 1984, at Mary Greeley Hospital, Ames, Iowa.

He was a graduate of Earlham High School and attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa. He lived in Earlham until 1935 and in Stuart until 1955. Since that time he has lived in Ames. He was married to Anna Marie Katharine (Sailor), who preceded him in death in 1953.

He was a carpenter and a member of the Carpenter's Union, was past president of the Stuart Board of Education (1954-55) the Masonic Lodge in Stuart, and the Congregational Church.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include one son, William Nathan Thompson, of Aurora, Colorado; one daughter, Mary Jackson, of Melvern, Pennsylvania; one brother, Robert Thompson, of Prescott, Arizona; three sisters, Hilda Richard, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Hazel Blagg, of Indianola, Iowa, and Margaret Hamilton, of Peoria, Illinois, and four grandchildren.

The body was donated to the University of Iowa for scientiffic purposes. The ashes are to be buried at Earlham later.

A memorial service for Lyle N. Thompson will be held Sunday, September 22, 1985 at the First Presbyterian Church in Earlham, Iowa. It will be part of the regular Sunday church service at 10:30 a.m., conducted by Gladys Priest, minister.

Lyle Thompson died March 21, 1984 at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. His body was dedicated to the College of Medicine University of Iowa, for research purposes. His ashes have recently been returned by that school to the McKee Funeral Home in Dexter for burial at the Earlham Community Cemetery. There will be no graveside service.

Lyle Thompson was born July 10, 1902 in Earlham. He was a carpenter, building contractor, husband, father, Mason, a gardener and an avid student of American history. He lived in Earlham, Stuart and Ames. He built many of the schools and houses in the Stuart area and, before, with his father, John, built many of the houses and barns in Earlham and the surrounding rural areas. His grandfather, Nathan, was a Civil War veteran and marched with Sherman to the sea.
