Shoeman RALPH THOMPSON Dies

A businessman on the Winterset square for over 50 years, Ralph Thompson, 82, died Thursday, January 13, 1977, at Madison County Memorial Hospital. In recent years his health had required gradual retirement from ownership and employment at Thompson and Toppenberg Shoe Store, where he worked with his grandson, John Toppenberg.

Born October 16, 1894, in Vinton, Iowa, Ralph Thompson was the son of Bushnell and Mary Dunbar Thompson. His family moved to Winterset when he was 12 years old.

Mr. Thompson served with the Iowa National Guard from January 1913 to 1917, a sergeant on the Texas border during the Mexican uprising prior to World War I. On February 21, 1917, he was married to Josephine Wintrode in Winterset.

Ralph Thompson was a charter member of the Winterset Lion's Club, a member of the L. O. Club and the Chamber of Commerce and was affiliated with the Presbyterian church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Fritz (Mary Bell) Toppenberg of Des Moines, a sister, Marjorie Cowan of Pasadena, Calif., one grandchild, John, and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on May 30, 1969, also his parents, one brother and one sister.

Funeral services for Ralph Thompson were conducted Saturday, January 15, at 1 p.m. from the First United Presbyterian Church of Winterset, Rev. Alan Paarker officiating.

Burial was made at the Winterset Cemetery.
