Mary Thomson, eldest daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Thomson, was born near Glasgow, Scotland, May 8, 1842, and passed away at her home in Winterset, Sept. 28, 1920, at the age of 74 years, 4 months and 20 days.
She came with her parents to America in 1865, settling in Henderson county, Illinois, where they united with the South Henderson United Presbyterian church. Feb. 4, 1864, the deceased was joined in wedlock with James G. Beck of Henderson county, Illinois, who was home on veteran furlough. In the fall of 1868, the family came to Madison county, locating on a farm in Jackson township, where the eldest son still lives.
Mrs. Beck was a charter member of the Pitzer United Presbyterian church. Eleven years ago Mr. and Mrs. Beck and Jeannette moved to Winterset and transferred their membership to the Winterset congregation. Last February Mr. and Mrs. Beck celebrated their fifty-sixth wedding anniversary.
Seven children were born to this family, five of whom are still living and able to be with their father in his hour of bereavement - Elizabeth Doley of Topeka, Kan., John C. of Pitzer, Samuel M. of Greenfield, Jeanette and Ethel Miller of Winterset. Thirteen grandchildren, nine of whom were with the granddfather, and two great grandchildren also survive.
Four sisters and one brother are left to mourn the loss of this loved one, as follows: Mrs. Jeannette Mekemson of Redding, Ia., Mrs. Hugh Thomson of Pitzer, Ia., Mrs. Anna Applegate of Dexter, Ia., Mrs. Elizabeth Graham of Spaulding, Ia., and Mrs. Jennie McCorkle of Smith Center, Kansas.
