ERNEST SHAULL, Ladora

Ernest “Spud” A. Shaull, 83, of Ladora died Aug. 5, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral services were held today at the Victor Baptist Church with Dr. John Shaull and Pastor Dan Andrews officiating. Burial was at Victor Cemetery.

Spud Shaull was born April 21, 1923, to Ernest and Emma (Fiester) Shaull of Ladora. On Jan. 31, 1943, he married Phyllis Mercer in Galt, Mo. Spud served in the United States Army from February 1943 to March 1945 and was awarded several military honors during this time — including the Silver Star, Purple Heart, three Bronze Stars and the Victory Medal. Spud owned a gas station in Ladora for many years and then became a rural mail carrier, retiring in 1984. Following his postal retirement, he worked at Koehn Motors in Victor for several years. Spud received Christ as his savior at the age of 26 and was a member of the Victor Baptist Church. He also was a member of the Rural Mail Carriers Association and the 87th Infantry Acorn Division. He served as mayor of Ladora for 10 years and was treasurer of the Victor Cooperative Telephone Company for 35 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife; two sisters, Donna Sims and Lucille Feller; three brothers, Gerald, Harlan and Edwin; and a grandson, Tyler Shaull.

He is survived by three sons, David Shaull of Locust Grove, Okla., Harley Shaull of Troy, Mo., and John Shaull of Winterset; two daughters, Mary Hebron of Puyallup, Wash., and Lorrie Kurschner of Caseville, Mich.; a brother, Wayne of Ladora; two sisters, Maxine Tranberry of Blairstown and Kate George of Fairfax; and 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
