Stewart Earl Dowler, son of Stewart R. and Sarah Jane Dowler, was born May 2, 1895, on the same farm where his death occurred Dec. 21, 1943, at the age of 48 years, 7 months and 19 days. He spent his entire life farming and stock raising, on the farm where he grew to manhood, and after his mother's death he tenderly cared for his aged father.

He leaves to mourn his aged father, one sister, Maude of Winterset, two brothers, Charles and Asa, both of St. Charles, and other relatives and friends.

He was a kind and dutiful son and brother, and a good neighbor. He lived an honest and upright life and was never too busy to lend a hand to anyone in need.

Funeral services were held from the Kale Funeral home in Truro, in charge of Rev. James A. Worrell, of the Methodist church. Interment was made in the St. Charles cemetery.

STEWART DOWLER COMMITS SUICIDE

48-Year-Old Farmer Living Near Hanley Ends Life With Shotgun

Stewart Dowler, 48-year-old farmer living near Hanley, committed suicide some time Tuesday by shooting himself with a shotgun.

Dowler’s body was found about daybreak Wednesday in a small pasture near the house, after and all night search on the part of neighbors, led by Sherriff Charles Neidt.

Dowler was not married, and lived with his elderly father, Stewart Dowler Sr. He had been missing since Tuesday morning, but not much was thought about it until he failed to show up for supper Tuesday evening. Then help was called and a search started that continued practically all night.

Mr. Dowler was a life-long resident of this county. No reason could be ascribed for his act.

He is survived by his father; two brothers, Asa P. Dowler of St. Charles and Charles Dowler of St. Charles; and a sister, Mrs. Maude Hiatt of Winterset.

No funeral arrangements had been announced here as the Madisonian went to press Wednesday.

Stewart Dowler Takes Own Life December 21

Stewart Dowler, 48-year-old farmer living near St. Charles with his father, was found dead early Wednesday morning from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Dowler had apparently shot himself Tuesday morning and was not missed until late Tuesday. Sheriff Charles Neidt and a group of neighbors hunted for the man Tuesday night, but he was not found until early Wednesday when his brother, Asa, found his body in back of a garage near the house.

Relatives believed that bad health was the cause of his action. Coroner Eggleston pronounced the death a suicide. Arrangements had not been completed for the funeral when the news went to press.
