Ray Huffman, Winterset

Raymond "Ray" E. Huffman, 82, of Winterset died April 26, 2003 at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 1, at the Church of the Nazarene in Winterset with the Rev. Bill Branson officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be at Winterset Cemetery with military honors performed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184, both of Winterset.

Ray Huffman was born Oct. 29, 1920, in Winterset to Everett and Pearl Huffman. He served in the United States Army, joining at Camp Dodge on June 20, 1944. He was in the 36th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, attaining the rank of Technician Fifth Grade . On April 10, 1945, during his tour of duty, he was wounded. Ray was the recipient of the Purple Heart American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge campaign. He was honorably discharged Feb. 6, 1946.

Ray enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. He also loved working on his century farm in Madison County where he raised cattle, soybeans, corn and hay. He had previously served as a deputy sheriff for Lane County in Oregon where he had resided for 43 years. While living in Oregon, he also owned and operated two service stations. He and his wife, Leta, along with his daughter and family, returned to Winterset in 1991. He was a life member of V.F.W. Post 8142 of Winterset and Disabled American Veterans Post of Veneta, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, George Huffman.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Leta Huffman of Winterset; two sons, Cliff Huffman (wife Leona) of Eugene, Ore. and Jerry Huffman (wife Jean) of Springfield, Ore.; a daughter, Rhonda Akers (husband Gene) of Winterset; six grandchildren, Theresa Shelby (husband Jeff), Kelly Huffman, Kristen Espy (husband John), Brandon Huffman (wife Julie); Michael Akers (wife Deaona) and Jeremiah Akers (friend Jacey Stephens); and two great-grandchildren, Joslyn and McKenzy Espy.
