ELIZABETH STRAWN VANNATTA

Elizabeth Strawn was born in Green county, Pennsylvania, April 11, 1841, and departed this life at eight o'clock a.m. Nov. 18, 1917, aged 76 years, 7 months and 7 days. She was a patient sufferer during an illness of five weeks, at the home of her son, George F., of Winterset.

At the age of 13 she moved overland with her parents from Pennsylvania to Bureau county, Illinois. The following spring, the family moved to LaSalle county. On April 2, 1864, she was married to S. W. Vanatta of Tonica, Ill. In the spring of 1868, they moved to Iroquois county, Illinois. Here they lived almost continuously on the same farm until the year 1910, when they wished to retire from farm life, hence she and her husband came to Winterset to be near their children, who had previously moved to Iowa and Nebraska.

To this union were born eight children, five of whom survive her. Two died in infancy and Laura Belle at the age of 13. The surviving children are: Mrs. Cora A. Gordon of Bentonsport, Iowa; Mrs. Adaline Schafer of Tobias, Nebr.; John S. and Mrs. Leona Datwyler of Peru and George F., of Winterset.

Her husband died Nov. 15, 1912, five years and three days previous to her death and each was sick five weeks and in these years she mourned for him daily and especially on the date of his death and burial. Since his death, she has made her home among her children and she has busied herself with her needle and by so doing her memory will be greatly cherished by the gifts to relatives and friends. Being a lover of Flowers, she took great delight in caring for them.

She leaves to mourn her death, besides the five children, 21 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one brother, Samuel Strawn of Canton, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Susan Bridges of Bloomington, Ill., and Mrs. Leona Stephenson of Pittsfield, Mass., besides numerous other relatives and friends. She was a kind, affectionate mother and neighbor and often expressed her willingness to be at home with her Father in whom she put her trust.

Funeral services were held from the late home on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. B. B. Burton, followed by burial in Winterset cemetery.
