Florence Dabney Smith Van Syoc, 90, of Godfrey, Ill., died June 22, 1997 at the Peach Haven Skilled Nursing care Facility in St. Louis, Mo. Burial of the cremated remains will be in the Winterset Cemetery later this fall.
She was born in Winterset on March 28, 1907 to Samuel Craig and Myrtle Dabney Smith. After attending Winterset High School, she attended George Washington University in Washington, D. C. She later graduated from the University of Iowa with a major in journalism. She received a masters degree from Boston University and did further graduate study at Harvard University. She taught secretarial subjects in Shenandoah High School, Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, and at a secretarial school in Boston, Mass.
In 1943 she married Wayland Bryce Van Syoc of Milo in the Harvard Memorial Chapel in Cambridge, Mass. They lived in Iowa City and Ann Arbor, Mich. for a number of years and also in the Orient for seven years before settling in Godfrey, Ill. She was well traveled and also a published author.
She was preceded in death by one son and one daughter. Surviving relatives include her husband; one daughter, Alison Haines of St. Louis, Mo.; and one son, Robert Wayland of Seattle, Ore.
