WILLIAM JACKSON

William, only son of Thomas and Margaret Spence Jackson, was born April 18, 1864 at Portpatrick, Scotland, and died at the Hazel Rowe Nursing Homes, Des Moines, Iowa the evening of May 26, 1952 at the age of eighty-eight years.

At the age of ten he and his only sister, Janet, were left orphans and were cared for in home of an uncle in Glasgow. When eighteen years old he immigrated to America and became an American citizen eight years later.

His early Christian training was in the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland in which he retained his membership.

After farming a number of years he became a rural letter carrier and followed that profession until his retirement in 1932 having faithfully served his patrons almost thirty-two years.

He was united in marriage to Laura Barnett in Earlham on May 25, 1893. To this union was born their only child, Wallace.

He is survived by his wife, his son, Wallace and wife; three grandchildren, William L. of Chicago, Illinois; Janet and June of Earlham, a great granddaughter, Ann Louise Jackson, his Spence relatives and a host of friends.

WILLIAM JACKSON DIED ON MONDAY

Had Retired in 1932, After 32 Years As Mail Carrier at Earlham

EARLHAM - William Jackson, a well-known resident here for many years, died at the Rawa nursing home in Des Moines Monday, May 26, after several years of failing health. He was 89 years of age.

Mr. Jackson was born at Port Patricks, Scotland, on April 18, 1864. He came to the United States when he was 18 years of age, settling near Winterset. In his earlier years here he engaged in farming, but in 1900 he became a rural mail carrier at Earlham. He carried a mail route there for 32 years, retiring in 1932.

He was married to Laura Barnett of Earlham in 1893. He is survived by a son, Wallace Jackson of Earlham, three grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held this Thursday from the Earlham Friends church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Willard Reynolds in charge. Burial will be made in the Earlham cemetery.
