Richard Clinton Mendenhall, son of Isaac and Arcena Mendenhall, was born near Redfield, Dallas county, Iowa, November 22, 1863. When he was ten years of age the family moved to Kansas where Richard grew to manhood and was married on May 20, 1886 to Miss Mary Ann Jackson. Of the eight children born in this home the first three--Jennie, Jessie and Sadie, were born in Kansas, the other five--Ira, Ida, Minnie, Katie and Edward being born when the family returned to Iowa about 1890, having lived in Earlham ever since. Mrs. Mendenhall passed away November 8, 1915 and the following year on October 12, Mr. Mendenhall was united in marriage with Permillia Jane Malloy.

Following a heart attack only last Friday night he passed away in his home in Earlham, Thursday morning, October 14, 1943, at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 12 days. His six daughters having preceeded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Permillia, one brother, James, of Tyrone, Oklahoma, two sons, Ira C. of Earlham, and Edward S. of Des Moines; thirteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00, from the local Friends church, the pastor, Rev. W. H. Wilson in charge. The Mesdames Mildred Maxwell and Helen Fry sang two numbers, with Mrs. Gertrude Conrad as accompanist. Burial was made in the family lot in the Earlham cemetery.
