Stephen D. Hood Sr., 58, of Savannah, Ga., died of cancer April 2, 2004 at his residence.

Stephen Hood was born and raised in Winterset and moved to Savannah in the late 1960s. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran serving in the Vietnam War. Stephen also was a 29-year veteran of the Savannah Police Department, having retired as a lieutenant in 2001. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Police No. 7, and was awarded the Officer of the Year award in 1977.

He is survived by his companion, Mrs. Gerry Long of Savannah, Ga.; one daughter, Denise Malphrus of Savannah, Ga.; one son, Stephen D. Hood Jr. of Savannah, Ga.; his mother, Marion Hood of Winterset; two brothers, Robert Hood of Urbandale and Gary Hood of Winterset; two sisters, Sherill Clark of Winterset and Karen Carter of Ankeny.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice Savannah, 1352 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, Ga., 31406 or to the Backus Children's Hospital.

Funeral arrangements were handled by the Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home, Savannah, Ga.

Stephen D. Hood, Sr., 58, died of cancer Thursday, April 2, 2004 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, May 23 at the First United Presbyterian Church of Winterset. Immediately following services, a reception will be held in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be directed to the church.
