Ryman J. Smith, formerly of Madison county, died Feb. 23, 1971, at his home in Springfield, Ill., after a lingering illness. He was 80 years of age.
Mr. Smith lived in Winterset for many years. He was born in Madison county March 31, 1890, a son of James S. and Mary Howell Smith. He married Meriam A. Baur, and farmed in the Van Meter area for some time, before moving to Ames where he engaged in farming for 17 years. After retiring, he lived in Winterset, but moved to Illinois six years ago.
He was a long-time member of the Masonic Lodge at Winterset, and at Springfield was a member of the Woodside Methodist church.
Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Esther Schmidt of Springfield, Mrs. Phyllis Veline of York, Nebr., and Mrs. Frances Ohrwall of Springfield, Va. He also leaves 10 grandchildren; a sister, Nellie Smith of Des Moines; and a brother, Harry H. Smith of Winterset
Funeral services were held last Thursday from the Staab Funeral home in Springfield, with burial in the Mt. Pulaski cemetery in Illinois.
