Elmer Gordon, 76 Died Wednesday

Elmer Gordon, a life-long resident of Madison county, died at his home five miles southeast of Earlham, early Wednesday morning following a heart attack. He was 76 years of age.

He had been in Earlham during the day on Tuesday and appeared in normal health. He had also shingled most of his house that day, stating in the evening that if he had felt better he could have finished the job.

Mr. Gordon is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Allen of Peru, Indiana, Mrs. Leo Miller of Dallas Center and Mrs. John N. Conrad of Earlham. He has nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Four of his grandsons and one grandson-in-law are now in the service of their country.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Welch Funeral Home. Rev. Arthur Henry will conduct the services. Burial will be made in the cemetery in Winterset.

Elmer I. A. Gordon, son of Jonathan A. and Mary Jane Gordon, died at his home southeast of Earlham, Wednesday morning, August 30, 1944, following a heart attack. He was 76 years, eight months and three days old. He was born in Winterset, Iowa, January 23, 1868 and was the oldest of six children, three sisters and two brothers, all of whom preceded him in death with the exception of one sister, Mrs. Edna Gilleland of Winterset.

He lived in and around Winterset until his marriage, when he and his wife moved to the neighborhood where he died. He was united in marriage to Marietta R. Martin on November 19, 1893. She preceded him in death, April 21, 1941. To this union three daughters were born, they are Mrs. Grace Allen of Peru, Indiana; Mrs. Daisy Miller of Dallas Center, Iowa; and Mrs. Mabel Conrad, Earlham.

When still a small boy he learned to play the drums and all of his life he had a great love for music. He united with the First Christian Church at Winterset when a young man.

He leaves to mourn his passing one sister, three daughters, 10 grandchildren (one grandchild preceded him in death) and three great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. Four of his grandsons and one grandson-in-law are now serving in the armed forces.

Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery beside his wife.
