Nancy E. Holbrook

Nancy Ellen Alford was born in North Carolina September 30, 1826 and died at the home of her son, Harry E. Holbrook, January 12, 1918, aged 91 years, 3 months and 12 days.

When a girl she removed with her parents to Indiana where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage December 23, 1846 to J. D. Holbrook. To this union three sons were born, William L. of Indianapolis, Indiana; Frank L. who died in 1900 at his home in Winfield, Kansas and Harry E. of this city with whom she had made her home for the past year. Her husband departed this life, November 14, 1900.

She came with her husband to Iowa in the spring of 1857 and located at Winterset and has lived here ever since, living for over 54 years in the old homestead on South Second avenue.

She was converted in early girlhood and united with the Methodist church. But shortly after her marriage she transferred her letter to the Presbyterian church of which congregation she has been a faithful member ever since. She counted her friends by the score and will be greatly missed.

Death of Mrs. Nancy Holbrook

After sixty years of continuous residence in Winterset, all but five years being lived in one house, Mrs. Nancy Alford Holbrook died early Sunday morning, past 91 years of age. She was a native of North Carolina, leaving that state in childhood for Indiana. In 1857, eleven years after her marriage to John Holbrook, they came to Winterset.

Until her strength failed from age, Mrs. Holbrook was a devoted attendant upon the service of her church, the Presbyterian of which she was a faithful member in Winterset for over fifty-two years.

Mrs. Holbrook was widely known as a woman of unusually strong character, making many friends and keeping them. Her death at so advanced an age removes from our midst one of the old type of pioneers.

Dr. J. W. Countermine conducted funeral services Monday afternoon in the Presbyterian church.
